Carpeting can be a beautiful and comfortable addition to a house, making it look fancy and giving your feet that happy feeling they deserve. But when that carpet gets dirty it can be a scarlet letter on your entire house, not to mention a hazard to your lung health. It's very important to keep your carpeting clean. Professional cleaning is worthwhile but how does one choose what type of cleaning to get?

Not all cleaners are healthy and safe. Some commercial carpet-cleaning companies use products that are very dangerous. These are particularly risky for young children, elderly people, pets and people with diseases. These products can be so harmful that it would be better to leave the carpet filled with dirt and bacteria. You may be wondering what could be so bad about these products. Well, a lot of traditional cleaners have alkalines, bleach, dye, disinfectants and/or harsh enzymes. These can all be toxic. Dry carpet cleaners use butyloxy ethanol which is also called buytl cellosolve. Butyl, has been found to cause damage to the central nervous system, liver and kidneys. Dry carpet cleaners may also include perchloroethylene, which can also damage the liver and kidneys. In addition, this may cause nausea, dizziness and fatigue. Animals and kids are highly at risk due to spending more time on the floor playing, doing homework, etc.

An additional drawback to using these cleaners is that the used water is harmful to the environment. This waste is often disposed of improperly and can get into waterways and harm the animals and plants dependent on those waterways. Sometimes this goes so far as to harm our own level of the food chain!

So why bother paying someone for this disservice? Well, you shouldn't and now you don't have to. People have begun to ask for green cleaning so they can not only protect their health and the health of their families and pets, but also to help keep their environment in better condition.

If you look, you can find commercial carpet cleaning companies that now offer "green" alternatives to the chemical cleaning that has ruled the market until now. They are answering the call to "go green" that is taking over this industry as well as others. These newer techniques utilize environmentally safer cleaning chemicals that are often made with bio-based ingredients. These also reduce how much water gets used. Another environmental bonus!

Not everyone is as honest as one would hope. Some companies claim to be "green" when they are not. To ensure you don't let those chemicals into your home, ask if the company's cleaning products are certified by Green Seal or Environmental Choice. These are both independent testing organizations. Products must have a low level of toxicity to all organisms and be biodegradable. They won't be certified unless they meet these qualifications and are also as good as or better than regular cleaning products.

When researching to find the perfect "green" carpet cleaners, know that the price should be approximately the same as traditional cleaners. Don't be cheated but also don't be fooled by prices that are way too low. Fair is the best way to go! These cleaners are more and more easily found online and in directories. So go "green" and tell your friends to help protect their health!
